“The Whip of God Decree”, Part 1: Why Can’t Universities Build Permanent Campuses That Last for Centuries?

(Afternoon of December 25, 2025)

Universities today seem blind and lost. Almost all of them (nearly 100 percent) are unsure about how to develop. This has led to a strong sense of utilitarianism and purpose-driven behavior among the vast majority of universities. One manifestation of this is the tendency to build increasingly larger campuses and relocate them frequently. Additionally, some universities, particularly specialized colleges or institutes, favor merging with other institutions (expanding in size but not necessarily in strength), often resulting in multiple campuses. Some cities, in their pursuit of development, empty out older campuses in city centers, deeming them too outdated, and abandon them in favor of new campuses in new districts, suburbs, or remote mountainous areas. These new campuses may appear grand but often feel vast and empty.

This phenomenon is widespread across the country, rather than being isolated or limited to a few cases. It seems many universities are enthusiastic about pursuing grandiose, expansive, and comprehensive approaches. In light of this, we cannot help but feel concern and skepticism. Why can’t universities remain steadfast and committed to their original purpose, focusing diligently on academic pursuits? Why not strengthen their core professional specialties? Why must campuses be relocated back and forth? Why must specialized or vocational colleges insist on transforming into comprehensive universities? Particularly when it comes to campuses, a university might be in one location for the first ten years and then move to another in the next decade, losing its original academic heritage in the process.

We can’t help but wonder: why can’t these universities establish permanent campuses or create a lasting main campus? Some universities seem to enjoy constant upheaval—being in one place for a few years and then relocating elsewhere. Can such changes truly lead to significant improvement? In reality, this inflicts considerable harm on universities and reflects a lack of responsibility, especially toward older campuses. These older campuses, once the heart and main headquarters of the university, may appear somewhat worn, but their cultural heritage exudes a sense of simplicity and solidity. When these older campuses (the main campuses) are reclaimed, replaced, sold, or even redeveloped into new real estate projects, the university’s roots are severed. The soul of the university is lost, and though the name may remain, much of its spirit dissipates. This is a deeply regrettable situation.
